ChatGPT has no folders in the classic sense as of 2026-09: it has Projects, which group chats together with shared files and instructions. Does ChatGPT have folders?
No, not under that name. What ChatGPT ships, as of 2026-09, is Projects: a container in the sidebar that holds chats plus files and custom instructions shared by every chat in the project. It is available on Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans. If all you want is a tidy list of chats under a heading, a project does more than you asked; if you want the chats to share context, it does exactly the right thing.

How to make folders in ChatGPT with Projects
The general shape, since menus change: create a project from the sidebar, give it a name, then drag the chat onto a project in the sidebar, or open the chat's menu and choose Move to project. To take a chat back out, open the chat's menu and choose Remove, or drag it out of the project. Projects are one level deep and each chat lives in one project. How to make folders in ChatGPT with NeatChats
Install the extension, open chatgpt.com, and a NeatChats panel appears above the chat history. Then:
- Click + in the panel header, type a name of up to 40 characters, press Enter.
- Hover any chat in the history, click the small + on its row and pick the folder. Chats can also be pinned from the same menu.
- Open a folder's menu for Rename, Move up or down, and Delete. Deleting removes the grouping only; the chats stay in ChatGPT.
- On Pro, the same menu offers New subfolder and Color.

ChatGPT folders gone or missing: what to check
Folders from any extension live outside ChatGPT, so they vanish for reasons ChatGPT knows nothing about. In order of likelihood: ChatGPT changed its sidebar and the extension cannot find the history (NeatChats hides its panel instead of breaking the page and says so in the popup; an update follows); the extension was disabled, removed or blocked by a policy; you are in a different Chrome profile or on a different computer, where the local storage is empty.
