How to search ChatGPT history: by title, inside chats, by date

How do I search my ChatGPT history?

Use the search built into ChatGPT first: open Search from the ChatGPT sidebar, or press Ctrl+K on Windows or Cmd+K on macOS on the web. Type a word or phrase from the chat, pick a filter if one is shown (All, Chats, Images, Documents, Projects) and select a result to open it. It is available to signed-in users on all ChatGPT plans, on web, iOS and Android, and it matches words in a chat's title or messages, so a chat whose title says nothing useful can still be found by a word from inside it. One more thing worth knowing: regular and archived chats can appear in results; deleted chats do not.

The two NeatChats searches sit in the panel the extension adds above the chat history. They do not replace ChatGPT's search; they answer the two cases it handles less well: a quick filter of the list while you scroll, and a search whose results stay in your browser.

How does NeatChats search by title?

Click the Search chats box in the panel and type. The sidebar is filtered as you type and a Titles list shows up to 20 matches, best first: a title that starts with your words ranks above one that contains them as a whole word, which ranks above one that merely contains the letters. Case and accents are ignored, so "resume" finds "Résumé draft". Press Escape or the × to clear.

The search covers the chats currently in the sidebar plus the titles NeatChats has remembered from earlier visits, up to 2,000 of them (the first 300 characters of each). That is how a folder can list a chat ChatGPT has not scrolled into view yet, and it is also the limit: a chat the extension has never seen is not in the list.

How do I search inside the text of ChatGPT chats?

1. On Pro, click "in content" next to the search box so it shows as pressed. On the free plan the button opens the Pro card instead.
2. Type the word or phrase and press Enter.
3. The status line starts at "Searching 0/N…", N being the number of chats it will read (up to 40), and counts up; when it finishes, an In content list shows each matching chat with a snippet around the first hit.

The text is fetched from chatgpt.com with the session you are already signed in with, which is why the panel says "Sign in to ChatGPT to search content" if that session has expired, and "ChatGPT is rate limiting. Try again in a minute" if ChatGPT refuses a burst of requests. Chats read once are kept in a local cache, so repeating a search is faster and costs ChatGPT nothing. Nothing is uploaded to NeatChats. Can I search ChatGPT history by date?

Not directly, as of 2026-09: the filters the help page lists for sidebar search are All, Chats, Images, Documents, Projects, and NeatChats has no date field either. Three things do work. Search a word you know you used in that period, such as a project or client name; ChatGPT's search matches message text, so it does not need to be in the title. File the chats of a period in a NeatChats folder as you go; the folder lists them newest first, which is the closest thing to a timeline the sidebar offers, and the organizing guide shows the steps. For anything older, request the account export (Profile menu > Settings > Data controls > Export data > Export > Confirm export); it holds every conversation in the account as files you can search offline with your own tools, and the export guide covers the wait and the download link.

Search cannot find a chat: what to check

• In ChatGPT: confirm the account and workspace you are signed in to, try other words from the chat, switch the filter to All, and look under Settings, Data controls, Archived chats. A recently created or deleted chat can take a moment to update. Deleted chats do not come back through search.
• In NeatChats title search: the chat must have been in the sidebar at least once while the extension was installed, and the title list keeps 2,000 entries, filed and pinned chats never dropped.
• In NeatChats content search: each search reads 40 chats, newest first, and keeps the first 16,000 characters of each. A word that appears only deep in a very long chat, or in a chat older than the 40 candidates, is missed; for those, use ChatGPT's own search, which covers the whole account. When nothing matches, "No chats contain that (N could not be read)" tells you how many chats returned an error; run the same search again.
