Can I transfer my ChatGPT history from one account to another?

How to move ChatGPT chats to another account

ChatGPT has no "move to account" button as of 2026-09. What works for one chat: open the conversation, select Share, review the preview, then select Create link or Copy link, open the link while signed in to the other account and continue the conversation there; continuing a shared conversation creates a separate, private conversation in the recipient's account. For everything at once there is only the data export (every conversation in the account, up to 7 days to arrive, link valid 24 hours), and it is a file for your records, not something ChatGPT loads back. NeatChats folders do not follow a chat into another account, because a continued chat is a new conversation with a new id; the backup file restores your filing on another computer for the same account.

Is there a way to move ChatGPT chats to another account?

Not in one step. As of 2026-09 the OpenAI help pages describe three things you can do with a conversation: share it by link, export the whole account as files, and copy its text. Only the first puts a working chat into a second account, one conversation at a time. The table sets them side by side, with the NeatChats backup added because people ask whether the folders come along.

How do I copy one chat to another account with a shared link?

Signed in to the old account, open the conversation, select Share, review the preview, then select Create link or Copy link. Review the preview: the whole conversation is shared unless you chose a single response.
Sign out, or open a private window, and sign in to the new account.
Open the link (it starts with https://chatgpt.com/share/) and use the option to continue the conversation. continuing a shared conversation creates a separate, private conversation in the recipient's account, and it appears in that account's history like any other chat.
Back in the old account, Settings > Data controls > Shared links > Manage, then Delete shared link (or Delete all shared links), so the link stops working for anyone else. deleting a shared link stops future access but does not delete the original conversation or a copy another person already saved.

Two limits follow from that table. A personal-account link is a snapshot, so make it after the last message you want carried over, or refresh it with Update link before the other account continues it. And a link is open to anyone who has it, so paste it into the other account and delete it, rather than leaving it in an email thread.

Can I move every chat at once?

Only as files. The account export (Profile menu > Settings > Data controls > Export data > Export > Confirm export) produces a ZIP with every conversation in the account; it is available on Free, Go, Plus, Pro and eligible Edu workspaces (Business and Enterprise ask the workspace owner), and you get an email or SMS with a download link when the export is ready, which can take up to 7 days, with the link valid for 24 hours. The help page lists no way to load that archive into another account, so treat it as your own copy: something to search, keep or paste from, not a migration. For a handful of chats, sharing each one is faster than waiting for the export; for hundreds, the export is the only complete copy, and the ones you still work in can be shared over as you need them.

What happens to NeatChats folders and pins?

A NeatChats folder does not contain chats; it contains chat ids, with the last title seen for each. When a chat is continued from a shared link, the copy is a separate conversation with a different id, so the folder in the old browser profile knows nothing about it. Two practical consequences:

Same account, new computer: export a backup from the extension popup (neatchats-backup-YYYY-MM-DD.json), import it on the other machine, and every folder, pin and filed chat is back, because the ids still match. Free stops at 3 folders, so a larger backup imports in full but new folders wait for Pro.
New account: import the same backup to get the folder names and structure, then file the copied chats again from the + on each row. The old entries point at ids that do not exist in this account; hover each one in its folder and click the × (Remove from folder) to clear them.
