How to delete or archive ChatGPT chats, and what happens to your folders

Archive or delete: which one do you want?

Archive when the chat is finished but might be worth a look later; delete when you want it gone. The difference that matters is recovery: an archived chat comes back with Unarchive under Data controls, a deleted chat does not come back at all. The table adds the NeatChats actions, because filing a chat is often what people actually want when they reach for Archive.

How do I archive a ChatGPT chat?

1. Open the chat's more options menu (…) in the history and select Archive; no confirmation is asked.
2. The chat leaves the regular sidebar. To see it again, Settings > Data controls > Archived chats (or View archived chats), then Unarchive or Delete.

Archiving changes nothing about retention: the chat is kept under the same rules as every other saved chat, and ChatGPT's search still returns it (the search guide covers what that search matches). That makes Archive the safe default for anything you are unsure about.

How do I delete a ChatGPT chat?

1. Open the chat's more options menu (…) in the history, select Delete, then confirm.
2. The chat disappears from your account view at once. OpenAI schedules it for permanent deletion within 30 days, unless it was already de-identified or must be kept longer for security or legal reasons.

There is no undo: a deleted chat cannot be restored, in ChatGPT or through OpenAI Support. If the chat holds anything you might need, copy it out first or request the account export (Profile menu > Settings > Data controls > Export data > Export > Confirm export), which arrives as an email or SMS with a download link when the export is ready, which can take up to 7 days; the export guide explains what the archive contains. An export requested after the deletion cannot restore the chat.

How do I archive or delete all chats at once?

Go to Settings > Data controls > Archive all chats or Delete all chats and confirm. Both actions cover the chats in your current account or workspace, including chats inside projects. Archive all is reversible chat by chat from the archived list; Delete all chats cannot be undone. Request the export and wait for it (up to 7 days, link valid 24 hours) before pressing Delete all if there is any chance you will want something back.

What happens to NeatChats folders when a chat is archived or deleted?

A NeatChats folder is a list of chat ids kept in your browser, with the last title the extension saw for each (up to 2,000 titles, filed and pinned chats never dropped). ChatGPT is not told about the folder, and the folder is not told when ChatGPT archives or deletes a chat, so:

• An archived chat stays in its folder and in the pinned list under the title it had. The chat itself is still in your account, so the entry keeps pointing at something real.
• A deleted chat also stays listed, under its last title, until you open the folder, hover the row and click the × (Remove from folder, or Unpin in the pinned list). Nothing else about the deleted chat is kept.
• Delete all chats in ChatGPT leaves every folder and pin in place. To start the panel from zero as well, delete the folders from their menus; the chats they listed are already gone. Your backup file (neatchats-backup-YYYY-MM-DD.json) still holds the old filing if you export one first.
• The reverse never happens: deleting a folder, removing a chat from a folder or unpinning it changes nothing in ChatGPT. The chat is exactly where it was in the history.

Folders are the middle ground the sidebar lacks: the chat stays in ChatGPT, searchable and unchanged, but the list you scroll gets shorter. The steps are in ChatGPT folders: how to create and use them.

A chat is missing: check before you assume it was deleted

The help page's own list, in order: confirm the account and workspace you are signed in to, including the email or single sign-on method; use ChatGPT's search, which finds archived chats; open Settings, Data controls, Archived chats; refresh or sign out and in again; check OpenAI's status page for an incident; request the data export to review what the account still holds. If the chat was in a NeatChats folder, the folder still shows its title, which at least tells you what it was called and lets you search for it by name.
